Default Finding the version of your Google Chrome & Auto-updating

Google Chrome 3 was released a few days back and I immediately decided to update to the latest version. But before doing that, I thought to check which version I was using currently (Chrome 1 or 2), which is unfortunately not as easy as task unlike Firefox or IE.

Chrome, when downloaded and installed (using the one click installer) is placed in a very un- common place. Unlike Firefox and IE which can be installed or will be installed in the Program Files directory, Google Chrome will be installed in the Local files of the current user.

If using Windows Vista, go to My computer – Users (In which ever disk it is) – then select your user name (or Public if no user name exists) – AppData – Local – Google – Chrome.

(Note that you may have to enable viewing of Hidden files to find the AppData. To do that, click on the Organize tab and then select folder and search options – View – Show hidden files and folders – Apply)

Only after reaching the Chrome folder did I find that I was on the 2 version of Chrome. Such a tidy task.

If you think there’s no other way to do it, then think again. Click on the Customize symbol (found at the top right corner of the Chrome browser just below the Browser closing X mark) and select About Google Chrome.

There you have it, the Chrome version number. You will also be notified if you are on the latest version or not and if not, you can simply click on the Update option to get the latest version.

Crap, why didn’t you say this one first?

Cool, even I came to know this only after I digged into the files to find the Chrome version. And btw, I’m enjoying the new themes in Chrome 3
