For a licensed game,
Afro Samurai has managed to get a lot of buzz. Thanks for that can go partially to the use of Samuel L. Jackson's voice, and to the gorgeous, hyper-violent, cell-shaded visuals. The end result is a gorgeous, gory, and gleefully profane, but anyone hoping for an expansion of the anime
Afro Samurai story other than a standard beat 'em up is going to be disappointed.
Afro!
Afro Samurai the game is just an interactive version of the TV series. The game takes you through Afro's quest to kill the man who killed his father, and remains faithful to the source material. Like most classic samurai and spaghetti westerns, Afro Samurai is the story of a lone killer who puts his own interests ahead of all else--in this case killing the wearer of the Number 1 headband, a psycho gun-slinger named Justice. Justice took said headband from Afro's father by decapitating him in front of the impressionable boy.

The story isn't new, but the style more than makes up for it. The mix of anime and blaxploitation elements lends a singular distinction to both the game and the show. Without a doubt, the game is banking on its audiovisuals. Luckily, the developers nailed it. Ron Pearlman voices Justice, Kelly Hu is the unlucky Afro love interest, and The Rza provides a great rap soundtrack.
