What's going on at Carver Elementary?

19 February 2009 – Carver Elementary is “On Fire and Going Higher” this year and now they’ll be cooking in the kitchen too! Carver Elementary was proud to announce the reopening of its Kitchen Classroom on Friday, February 13. The school was originally designed to have a “kitchen classroom set aside for teachers to use as a “real world” learning environment for their students. Due to overcrowding in the school the space has not been used as a learning kitchen for several years.
Through tireless efforts of many staff members and “Donors Choose” grant money, the kitchen has been revitalized and is up and running. In honor of this special occasion, Mrs. Whaley and Ms. Jones (Media Center Coordinators) have been providing lessons for students on cooking and recipes. The students have been so excited that they have even brought in their own to share with others in the school. First, fourth, and fifth grade students have also sent Thank You letters to “Donors Choose.” Donations of new or gently used kitchen cooking items (pots and pans, etc.) are welcomed.
Students have also been participating in morning announcements by reading brief biographies on famous African-Americans in honor of African-American History Month. Classes have been involved this month with lessons that embrace America’s diverse populations allowing students to make connections with all people. Mrs. Casey’s fourth grade class has even sent letters of appreciation to President Obama and Governor Perdue as a follow-up to her lesson “Letters to Leaders.”
Carver Elementary continues to go that extra degree! Keep up the good work tigers! GROWL!
Jump Rope for Heart
Earlier this week, Carver Elementary announced that it had raised $12,422.80 for Jump Rope for Heart.
Top students for this year’s fundraiser were:
1st Place: Caroline Summerlin in Mrs. C. Smith’s 2nd grade class. Caroline raised the highest amount any student has ever raised at Carver. She collected $1,050.
2nd Place: Austin McCullen in Ms. Lewis’s homerun class. Austin raised $400.
3rd Place: Gage Outlaw in Mrs. Atwood’s Kindergarten class. He raised $359.
4th Place: Caitlyn Ulrich in Mrs. Morgan’s third grade class. She raised $307.
5th Place: Zachary Price in Mrs. Kinlaw’s 5th grade class. He raised $300.
Extra Effort Award: Jorge Ramirez in Mrs. O’Neal’s homeroom. This award is given to the student who went the extra mile and contacted many different people to raise their donations.
These top donators will be going to Pizza Village for lunch. Also, our top homeroom class this year is Mrs. Carolyn Smith’s second grade class. They raised a total of $1460. This is the most money any class has ever raised at Carver. Mrs. Smith’s class will receive an extra PE class with a popcorn party.
Everyone at Carver should be very proud of the job we did raising so much money to support the American Heart Association and helping to save lives!
