Default Photoshop Styles How-To

Photoshop Styles How-To

Here's a tutorial for beginners on how to use Photoshop styles,

The default Photoshop styles can be found in the ..Program Files > Adobe Photoshop... > Presets > Styles folder. You don't have to use this folder, just make sure you make a note of where you save the style file.

I'll be using a small highlight as the example for this tutorial. So start up with a 231 x 38 px image with transparent background. Here I've zoomed in and positioned some guidelines which will be the size of the highlight.

For prefer to use highlights that has some transparent pixel heights above/below, simply because they look better, and you don't get any overlap of text above/below.

Now we need to load the style file, so choose one of the shape tools from the tools palette. (I'll be using the Rectangle Tool). Click the menu button next to the current style. This gives you the styles palette. Click the menu button in the upper right corner of this palette and choose "Load Styles...". Locate the style file you saved in the next box and load it.

The styles are loaded in the palette. Click and choose the one you like.

Choose the color for the shape. And then left-click in one of the corners of the guideline box, drag to the opposite diagonal corner, and release the mouse button. Presto!

And then it's simply a matter of choosing "Save for Web..." from the file menu, and saving your image as a transparent PNG file.

You can also use the Rounded Rectangle Tool for a more rounded look to your highlights and other bars.
