Default Cardiac Risks Far Higher With Newer Antipsychotic Drugs

Boston (dbTechno) - According to a study, newer antipsychotic drugs pose cardiac risks to patients.
Researchers were led by Wayne Ray of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Division of Pharmacoepidemiology.
They carried out a study to see what type of risks were associated with these new antipsychotics drugs.
These drugs are used to treat anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, etc.
The drugs in question for the study included clozapine (Clorazil), quetiapine (Seroquel), risperidone (Risperdal), and olanzapine (Zyprexa).
These drugs are all approved to be used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but they may pose many risks.
Researchers looked at medical records of nearly 45,000 patients who used older antipsychotics drugs, and compared them to roughly 46,000 on the newer drugs.
They also examined over 186,000 who did not take either of the drugs.
They found those on the newer antipsychotic drugs were 2.26 times more likely to suffer from cardiac death compared to those not on any medication.
The risk was 1.99 times higher when comparing newer antipsychotic drugs to older ones.
The risk increased with higher doses of the drugs overall.
